Embedded & Communication Systems (ECS)

The ECS department studies innovating technologies for embedded systems - including the hardware and software parts - and develops prototypes on request of the companies. It mainly focuses on intelligent and communicating wireless systems for a large range of applications from road transport systems to eHealth as well as consumer electronics and home automation,… It also studies the systems with low power consumption, networks of sensors, reconfigurable systems, critical systems and methodologies related to hardware and software certifications (RTCA-DO-254 and DO-178B standards particularly).

The Embedded & Communication Systems department has been conceiving embedded systems implementing electronic modules with their embedded corresponding software since 2001. It studies particularly programmable components technologies - or reprogrammable such as FPGAs -, the various techniques and protocols of wireless communication, and regarding the software, the methodological aspects associated to the standards up to certification for the critical systems. The mission of the department is to help the companies to conceive the new generations of their embedded systems by giving them access to the state of the art of technologies to answer to new challenges, such as:

• Higher integration,

• The intelligence and flexibility of the systems,

• The new wireless communication protocols,

• The ultra low power consumption, etc...

The continuous cost reduction and the growing processing power of these systems make them relevant for a wide range of applications. The Embedded & Communication Systems department has been developing electronic systems for several years in different areas such as :

• Road transport with systems enabling an intelligent analysis of eco-driving behaviours, and intelligent fleet management (route follow-up, predictive maintenance)

• eHealth with the study of adapted systems enabling home and mobile health telemonitoring with autonomous medical devices and sensors able to communicate their results automatically to a health centre but also by taking into account the social aspect of the follow-up of the patients or the old persons via the implementation of accessible social networks through adapted interfaces.

Thanks to its expertise, the department can lead feasibility studies in very short delays and develop prototypes to validate concepts and prepare the start of production. The services offered by the ECS department are detailed in the page ’Business Services’.
